In SAMOUNI ROAD, Director Stefano Savona (“Tahrir Liberation Square”) along with animator Simone Massi, crafts a three-dimensional portrait of one family at the heart of the 2009 killing of 29 Palestinian farmers, their wives and children by Israeli army forces in a quiet village in Gaza.
Starting with the celebration of a family wedding and working backwards using the recollections of Amal (the groom’s little sister) to build the story, Savona employs a mix of scratchy black-and-white animation with a linocut feel and reconstructed drone imagery to recreate the terrifying three-week Operation Cast Lead tragedy (a.k.a. the Gaza Massacre).
What emerges is a powerful tale of survival and resilience; of devastation and reconstruction. Now, as Amal, Fuad, and their brothers and cousins, all of whom who have lost their parents, their houses and their olive trees, start the process of rebuilding their home they also face their most difficult task: piecing together their own memories.
